Treatment Approach.

Jennifer uses a trauma informed framework to build a therapeutic alliance with clients; an approach to client care that recognizes the role of an individual's trauma history on their emotions, behaviors, and perspective.

Often individuals seek mental health therapy to decrease the duration, frequency, and intensity of their emotional and psychological symptoms while also building capacity for coping and resilience.

Services Offered

Individual Therapy with Adolescents and Adults

Birch Tree Wellness, LLC. utilizes an interpersonal and strengths based approach in individual counseling. Clients may be asked to complete various mental health assessments to assist with therapy goals over the course of treatment. By using techniques from Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Motivational Interviewing clients are assisted with connecting the dots between their daily emotions, beliefs, and resulting behaviors. The developmental stages of life look different for every individual, and time spent in therapy is customized to personal needs. The goal of therapy is to assist clients with challenging negative thinking patterns, and developing new and effective coping skills.

Mindfulness and Reducing Stress

"The goal of life is to make your heartbeat match the beat of the universe, to match your nature with Nature."- Joseph Campbell

The mind, body, and stress response of the nervous system are all interconnected and interdependent. Developing mindfulness practices can increase an individual’s ability to tolerate stress and combat symptoms of anxiety, panic, and depression. Jennifer has completed Jon Kabat-Zinn’s Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction training, which was provided by the Grand Rapids Center for Mindfulness.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy

Jennifer has completed continuing education with the Dialectical Behavior Therapy Institute of Michigan in skills training fundamentals, comprehensive DBT, adolescent and multi-family, and targeting and case formulation. Jennifer can provide individual therapy informed by Dialectical Behavior Therapy when appropriate for a client's presenting concerns. DBT focuses on developing skills and strategies through mindfulness, interpersonal effectiveness, distress tolerance, and emotion regulation.
